These birds are endemic (found nowhere else in the world) to the Andaman islands. Once very uncommon and confined to remote places, Andaman Teals (Anas albogularis) been recorded in ponds close to Port Blair after the tsunami of 2004. They are usually seen in flocks numbering more than a 100 birds. The unique white marking around the eye varies from individual to individual, growing in size with age – some of the older teals have an almost entirely white head.
